Hello and welcome to ESPN’s live coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
On the sixth day, India has medal chances in boxing, squash, weightlifting and athletics. As always, we will have our correspondent Anirudh Menon in Birmingham to bring us the sights and sounds of all the action. Follow along!
In boxing, where semi-finalists are assured medals, India has as many as five players in contention. World champion Nikhat Zareen, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, Nitu (who is playing in Mary Kom’s category) among women and Ashish Kumar and Mohammed Hussamuddin among men will all fight it out respective quarterfinals in women’s boxing.
In athletics, Manpreet Kaur will look for India’s first track and field medal of this edition after Seema Punia failed to medal at the CWG for the first time last night. Coming back from a doping ban, the shot putter will have a lot to prove.
In squash, Saurav Ghosal will play the bronze medal match while there will more hope for weightlifting medals, which has been India’s most prolific sport in Birmingham so far. Both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams will be playing their Group matches today while the Indian cricket team will take on Barbados in their final group game, which is a must-win of sorts.
Para Table Tennis will also see Indians in action with Tokyo Paralympic medallist Bhavina Patel opening her campaign. Lawn Bowls, now a medal sport for India, will also be there throughout the day.
